Benign Neglect Towards Horses

I have noticed so many people lately just warehouse their horses in stalls. I have heard of and seen horses who have stood in stalls for 6 months to a year. The owners never go see them or turn them out. Don’t spend anytime with them or give them love. This creates a void that will be filled by someone who takes pity on the poor animal and starts caring for the animal like it is their own. These people are trying to give the horse what the person responsible for the horse will not.

These sweet caretakers are the ones who start noticing the problems in the hooves or coat. They are the ones who do what they can, by alerting barn owners and managers of the horses needs not being met. This is where it gets sticky. Who is responsible for this lack of care, the barn owner/manager or the owner? To me it is ultimately the owner but the barn owner/manager is responsible in my opinion as well. It is happening on their property.

The easy solution to this would be the owner coming out themselves at least twice a week and spending time with their own horse. The second solution to this would be paying the barn to turn the horse out and give the extra care needed. The third solution to this is leasing the horse to someone who can’t afford to buy and pay for all of the care of the horse but the can afford a little bit. Why do more people not look into these solutions? I will never understand.

These are just the thoughts that have really been heavy on my mind lately. I don’t want the horses to lose their herd and home that they love, but wouldn’t it be nice if the horses got the love and attention they deserve?
